Announcing Pantone Colour of the Year 2016.

Pantone-colour-of-the-year-2016-Rose-Quartz-and-Serenity-photo-by-Geraldine-Tan-Little-Big-Bell-blogIt is an honour to be asked by Pantone this year to announce their Colours of The Year for 2016 on the blog.

Yes, you heard right. It’s not just one colour but it’s a pairing of colours.

I have kept this secret knowledge for weeks and have been bursting to tell everyone.

Today is the day! I can now shout it loud.

Introducing you to SERENITY (blue) and ROSE QUARTZ (pink).

The swatches above were sent to me by Pantone. They came specially vacuum packed to preserve the true likeness of the colour.

Love! Love! Love! is all I can say. Both my favourite colours.

Direct your eyes to the general template colour of my blog. It looks pretty close to Rose Quartz and Serenity right? No wonder I love these colours so much, they are very Little Big Bell.

Pantone have stated that they have picked this harmonious pairing of shades to embody the mindset of tranquility and inner peace, an antidote to the stress of modern day lives.

They are not wrong there. I’m already feeling an instant calm.Pantone-colour-of-the-year-2016-Pantone-color-of-the-year-Rose-Quartz-and-Serenity-featured-on-Little-Big-Bell-blogI’ve gathered a few objects around my house that match the new Pantone shades to make a little moodboard.

I’m loving my new blue wire mesh board from Block Design that I have used as my display. Hook and clip objects and cards on. It would be a perfect template for pinning your advent calendar pouches on. I’m a bit late for that this year.

The blue of my mesh board is a lighter shade than Serenity. It’s more of a light Turquoise, but I wanted to demonstrate that Serenity is that perfect tone that could mix and match with other shades of blues.

Finding an object in the house that was the exact same colour as Serenity was difficult. It truly is a novel blue. To be honest, I’ve been transfixed by it, trying to figure out the pigment composition of this unique tone.

It has a dusky element to it and also reminds me of a very smooth and light medium tone of denim.

I found two products that have colours closest to Serenity. They are the White Company’s blue Cashmere socks and Arro home’s Whale and ladder tea towels.Pantone-color-of-the-year-2016-photo-by-Little-Big-Bell-blogRose Quartz Pink has been described by Pantone as likening to a serene sunset. I can see what they mean. It’s that rosy pink you sometimes see amongst the billowy white clouds. That pink that lights up the sky and you need to capture it on your camera phone ( oh well, I do anyway ).

When I examine the swatch closely, I realise that Rose Quartz is not a dusky pink. It has a vibrant note in it, maybe a little tinge of a light coral. It pairs well with the calm of Serenity. I have placed the two shades together for you to see.Pantone-color-of-the-year-2016-styled-by-Geraldine-of-Little-Big-Bell_

Arro home has shown in their tea towels how Serenity can look great with black and even better, with another one of my favourite colours, a bright pop of Canary yellow. Gold will look great too with these two new Pantone colours.

I have placed Serenity and Rose Quartz against different shades and tones of blues and pinks. They seem to be able to mix and blend well.

I am so excited to see these colours being adopted in the world of Fashion, Beauty and Interiors. I can’t see there will be much objection. They are beautiful. These are no longer gender colours as society moves towards equality. I can see crisp male shirts in Rose quartz or even as a Seersucker pink striped tie.

I’m excited for Spring. Despite it being Winter, I think pastels are holding their own. There is no longer the conventional ‘have to’ all moody shades for colder seasons.

What do you think of the new colours?

  1. I love them and agree with your comments about losing the ‘season’ colours – finally. I like this pink/peach with the yellow too and also with copper to give it some depth.
Thank you for beautiful photographs … as always
