Maria Hatling – another talent unveiled

Maria-Hatling-makecreateI recently came across Maria Hatling, the resident artist of the week at the Fritz Hansen store in London.

She was there as part of the Makecreate project in which a negotiated space in store allows for an artist to exhibit their work, to gain further exposure.

Maria is a Norwegian artist of Korean descent. I was interested to learn that she used to be the print and homeware designer for Orla Kiely, helping launch the brand’s homeware collection back in 2008.

Maria works across a variety of media, from painting with acrylics on canvas to collage, from textiles to silkscreen & giclee prints on paper.

Maria’s paintings have deep significance to her and is often an expression of her experiences.

The image of keys in her prints  titled ‘The key to happiness‘ depicts a personal phase in her professional creative life.

Paper clips are also widely featured and this has a hidden political message, as this was apparently a symbol of Norwegians’ resistance to Nazi occupation.

Maria-hatling-swan

I was drawn to this black Swan print. I didn’t have a chance to ask Maria whether there was a sentiment attached. What do you think?

Her works translated into soft furnishings are equally stunning.

I do adore the black and white versions. If you want to see and purchase Maria’s works, she will be exhibiting at the Deptford branch of Cockpit Arts studio this weekend.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend x
