The power of pink with Pink Lady apples and a DIY.

Pink-Lady-apples-photo-by-Little-Big-BellIt’s no surprise to all that I love colour.

This week I have blogged about the power of yellow. I now turn my attention to my other favourite colour, that is pink.

Pink is all around us in nature. Introducing you to the power of pink from Pink Lady apples.

Wouldn’t it be amazing to turn nature’s hue into paint? That was precisely what Pink Lady® apples have done.

It was so fun to receive a tin of their colour match paint to experiment with.DIY-magazine-box-with-Pink-Lady-paint-photo-by-Geraldine-Tan-Little-Big-BellI decided to decorate an old wooden magazine box in Pink Lady stripes.

It was so easy to do. Just place strips of Washi tape on the box to create the stripes. Paint over, let dry, then strip off the tapePink-apple-power-of-pink-Little-Big-BellWhat do you think? Beats the boring old box right?Pink-Lady-apples-Power-of-pink-photo-by-Little-Big-BellSee how close the colour matches my Pink Lady apples.

Incidentally, did you know that a Pink Lady apple is the first to blossom on the tree and the last to be harvested? That time on the tree allows for it to develop their unique fizz, distinctive blush, sweet flavour and crunchy texture.

Pink Lady apples are definitely a favourite in our household.Pink-Lady-apples-photo-by-Geraldine-Tan-Little-Big-BellSo, what is it about pink that cheers me up?

To me, it’s a feel good, warm and comforting colour. It’s like the rosy cheeks after a healthy run or the  blush from excitement and happiness.Magazine-rack-DIY-photo-by-Little-Big-BellPink has constantly been blamed for stereotyping, yet we are all drawn to it, both men and women.

Pink Lady asked colour psychology expert Karen Haller to explain why pink generated such strong reactions.

Here’s what she said : It’s no coincidence that little girls love pink, it’s a colour that signifies sweetness in food and is linked to maternal love by our subconscious. It’s a feel-good, comforting colour that appeals to all humans, male and female, young and old alike. The confusion arises when we apply social conditions to a particular colour and it becomes something we feel we should view in a particular way. We base our choices on what we think we should do or we follow what everyone else is doing because we‘re worried about being judged, instead of embracing a colour because of how it speaks to us or makes us feel.”
Pink-lady-apple-photo-by-Little-Big-BellKaren also says: “Established research into theories relating to colour and psychology suggest each colour has specific effects that influence us on all levels; mental, emotional and physical. When we see colours they send unconscious messages in an emotional language that we understand instinctively. Pink is physically soothing, which is why on the whole we find pink a calming, gentle hue. Interestingly though bright bubble gum or magenta pinks which are quite intense hues are physically stimulating.”Table-styling-the-power-of-pink-with-Pink-Lady-apples-Little-Big-BellSo why restrain from pink? If it makes you happy then embrace it. I know I do.

Pink comes in all tones and shades. I love to mix and match them together when I style. Here is a workspace vignette that I have created. Alongside the warmth of Pink Lady, I have added brighter pops of Fuchsia pink. Pink-Lady-Little-Big-BellPastel shades of blues and even mint greens would look perfect next to pinks.Pink-Lady-apple-paint-photo-and-styling-by-Geraldine-Tan-Little-Big-BellYou can’t go wrong with adding some light pastel pinks and golds.The-power-of-pink-with-pink-lady-apple-photo-by-Little-Big-BellTry mixing and matching your pinks with other colour at home. It really is so fun to do and visually so calming and happy.Pink-Lady-apple-photo-by-Geraldine-TanI’m happy there is pink in my life. Each crunchy bite of my Pink Lady apple reminds me of that joy.

Hope you have enjoyed this post. Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.

  1. Such a nice colour and cute DIY, G! xx

  2. Great job on the box! And I love Karen Haller’s thoughts on pink 🙂 I have a male friend who is very proud of wearing a pink shirt to disrupt gender stereotypes of the colour (I should add he is a big football supporter and mixing in very traditionally masculine circles). If you like a colour and it makes you feel good you should embrace it, just as you and Karen have shown!

  3. Love what you did to transform your magazine holder, that’s given me lots of ideas!
