Urban Flower Company

Yesterday afternoon, after the school run, I decided to visit my local florist, Urban Flower Company.  In part due to the need for beautiful blooms to cheer up a fickle day of rain but mainly to show support to a fellow creative who suffered a recent setback.

This setback was thousands of pounds of damage caused when a police car careered off the road during a chase and went through the shop front. You can read more about it in this Evening Standard article. Luckily, no one was seriously injured.

Now boarded up in the front, the business has continued to trade via a side entrance at the rear of the shop. I believe the local community have rallied with support.

The Urban Flower Company -  I have often admired the flowers stocked in this store alongside the talented creativity on display. The owner is 27 year old Matthew Richardson, who in a previous interview for Ham and High newspaper was quoted as saying he wants to be the face of flowers like Jamie Oliver is to food. He is definitely on that path as his store is popular with numerous celebrity clients and wedding bookings.

I went into the store with a simple glass bottle (picture at the very top) and within 2 minutes, Matthew had created the beautiful spring display for me in varying tones of blues – so perfect.

I also loved the Peonies and bought the pink one above, beautiful on its own in a simple glass vase.

I will definitely be making more regular visits in the future and hopefully be able to show you what new creations Matthew comes up with.

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend. x

  2. love the bouquet of flowers and peonies are among my favourite flowers ever … always feel good went fresh flowers are at home. enjoy your week-end (I am off to Italy for the week-end in a gloomy rainy weather …wish I could go back home sooner than expected!)

Thanks Toni, the flower shop is well worth a visit. We are lucky to have it so locally. Happy weekend. xx

  3. Wow!! Did he arrange that first bouquet of flowers for you in your own jar? I’d never heard of this before that a florist arranges flowers in a jar you bring… It’s a cool idea and I can tell he’s on his way to become a great florist. You can just tell by looking at his first arrangement. He’s got an eye for detail and I just LOVE these beautiful blue-purple hues in the flowers. Gorgeous!
It’s great that you supported him by buying some bunches of flowers – it’s definitely a win-win situation: you get happy by looking at these pretties and he’s happy you bought some flowers to help him through this awful situation that happened to his shop. Will definitely have to go and visit his shop soon when I’m in town. 😉
Love and a great weekend to you Geraldine!! 🙂 Inge x

  4. So nice to read the story behind the beautiful arrangement I so admired on Instagram! Lovely to hear about communities rallying behind people and businesses at times like that, especially in a big village like London! Mel x

I’m so pleased you enjoyed the story. It’s great there is such a sense of community here. x

  5. Such a beautiful arrangement! Having always been bought very average flowers from a man in my life, it’s refreshing to see a man with such creative floristry talent! Such a shame about the shop front, I hope Matthew is able to get it sorted quickly and get back on his feet. xx

Thank you Hollie. I agree about the talent. I think they have been very resilient and are up trading again, be it from a side entrance. Have a good week. xx

What a great concept – bring your vase to your friendly florist and let he/she create the perfect arrangement for you! Genius! I’ve often struggled to get it just right – have been known to lobbed off much of the stems of ‘long-stemmed’ roses till they look like dwarf hybrid.

  8. Hi Geraldine, so young and so talented. I’m glad that the local community rallied around in support. The flowers are lovely. xD
