How to decorate a student university room in halls. My 15 top tips to create a cool student room at uni.

I’ve always wanted to decorate a student university room.

This September, the opportunity arose, as my daughter was starting her undergraduate degree.

Firstly, when you think about university accommodation, do you think of a small dark box with dated furniture?

Indeed, many of the accommodation halls that I’ve visited were like that.

However, I was pleasantly surprised by Birmingham university’s accommodation. Everything was beautifully set up , clean and modern.  In fact, the whole of Birmingham university’s campus is beautiful.

It made me wish I was back at uni. I can only now live vicariously through my daughter.

The room was the perfect blank canvas for me and my daughter to decorate.

Above is the before shot of Chamberlain hall.student university roomHere is the after shot.

What do you think? I’m so pleased with how it has turned out, because it feels like home for my daughter.student university roomSo let’s talk through what are the key elements for creating a cool student university room.

1.Patterned duvet cover and colourful throw.

Bring some joy with a fun duvet cover. Say no to bland, plain duvet covers.

This peaches duvet cover and pink fleece throw were purchased from Urban Outfitters.

2.Cushions.

Definite must haves to accessorise the room. We went for a fluffy sloth and quirky lucky cat cushion.3.A rug.

We used a small rug that was machine washable to add some texture and warmth to the space.student university room4.Create a gallery wall.

I helped my daughter pick some of my art prints from home to create this. I’ve removed the glass from the frames, since they were going above her bed.

5.Fairy lights

This is a must in any student’s room to create that zen like ambience after a busy day at lectures.

I’ve secured the fairy lights with Command clear decorating clips that can be easily removed without causing damage or marks to the walls.

6.Neon light.

I expect this is something very much on a teen’s wish list right? My daughter’s light was specially created for her by Sammy of neonpoodle.

Do check out neonpoodle’s site and get those customised orders in now before Christmas.student university roomA lovely cosy feel right?

7.Call your parents print

That Call your parents art print from Pedlars has finally found its purpose, held up with Command strips that do no damage to walls.8.A colourful wall of inspirational quotes.

Colour and positivity is so important for self care and mental wellbeing, don’t you think?I’ve put up this wall of inspirational quotes near her workspace, using Command Spring clips.student university room9.Photos.

When away from home, it’s easy to miss friends and family, so hanging up their photos can be comforting.

We put some hanging picture frames up using Command brand clear medium hooks.

10.Mirror.

A small wall mirror for putting on lipstick before a party is a must right?I used a Command brand clear medium hook to hold the mirror up.11.Key and bag tidy

After a night out partying, it could be a mad panic the next morning to find things.

This Command key rail would be perfect for her keys, I’ve picked this medium white Command designer hook to hold her bag.The rail and hook are again easily removable without leaving marks or holes on the wall.student university roomMy daughter was lucky to get an en suite bathroom with her room.

Here are some of the uni essentials to style this space.

12.laundry basket.

She chose a simple striped one.

13.Toothbrush holder

Her toothbrush holder is from Command too.

You can also use it to hold a razor in the shower. It’s so much nicer to be able to reach your toiletries when having your shower don’t you think.

14.Bath caddy

This is the Command bath caddy that can hold up quite a few bottles of your favourite products.15. Towel hook

The ensuite bathroom had quite a few hooks, but you can never have too many hooks.

We placed this Command medium hook next to the basin, so that the towel can be reached easily after a face rinse. So there you go, the student university room makeover. It was so fun to do.

Hope you’ve enjoyed the tips. What do you think? I certainly wished my university accommodation was like this.

Finally, have a lovely week.
